Gustavo Oliveri, President of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), explained the organization’s position regarding the mandatory challenger status of Interim WBO Heavyweight Champion Joseph Parker, who is next in line to face undisputed world champion Oleksandr Usyk.
“Please note that I am obligated to consistently enforce the regulatory framework governing the operations of the WBO.
In this case, Usyk must fulfill his mandatory title defense against Joseph Parker. The WBO has officially informed all parties about the commencement of negotiations and has issued the appropriate order. If this does not happen, the WBO will initiate the purse bid procedure in accordance with our current rules.
Put simply, I am required to follow the rules regardless of who the boxer, promoter, manager, advisor, or intermediary is,” said Oliveri.
On July 19, Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) scored a fifth-round knockout win over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in London. On July 24, the WBO sanctioned the bout between Usyk and Parker (36-3, 24 KOs), with negotiations expected to begin within a month of that date.
