Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk has cited a lingering back injury as the reason for seeking an exception and an extension of the negotiation deadline for his fight with interim WBO champion Joseph Parker, reports BoxingScene.
It is also noted that years of performing at the highest level have taken their toll on the 38-year-old Ukrainian.
Earlier, it became known that Usyk’s team reached out to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) with a request to prolong the negotiation period with Parker, the deadline for which expires on August 24.
On July 19, Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) defeated Daniel Dubois by knockout in the fifth round, becoming the undisputed champion of the world for the third time.
In February, Joseph Parker (36-3, 24 KOs) stopped Martin Bakole with a technical knockout in the second round.
