American lightweight Keyshawn Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) has addressed the weigh-in miss ahead of his scheduled bout against Edwin De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs), which will cost him the WBO world title in the lightweight division (limit: 61.2 kg / 135 lbs).
Following the official weigh-in, Davis spoke candidly about the situation, saying he simply can’t make the weight anymore:
“I’ve outgrown this weight class. I’ve been making this weight for over four years — I just outgrew it.
I tried, you know? Stayed up late last night trying to cut weight, woke up early this morning — tried again.
I just can’t make this weight anymore. I already felt it in my last fight.
Thank God I made it then — I don’t even know how I did it. But it is what it is.
We’re putting on a show. Praying everything goes as planned. I think he (Edwin De Los Santos) will still take the fight.
The show must go on. Honestly, I was already planning to move up to 140 after this fight anyway. So, hey — let it be what it is,” Davis said.
As reported, Davis came in 4.3 pounds (approx. 2 kg) over the limit and will be stripped of the WBO world title ahead of what was meant to be his first defense.
Only De Los Santos remains eligible to win the belt.
