Eddie Hearn Wants to Continue Working with Shakur Stevenson

Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn has opened up about his ongoing collaboration with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs).

It’s pretty straightforward: we had a two-fight agreement with Shakur Stevenson. Nothing has changed, and there haven’t been any signs in our communication suggesting otherwise. After the fight with Zepeda, the contract ends, the agreement will be up, and I’d like to believe we’ll extend it.

I have a great relationship with Shakur — even though he recently beat me in a game of table tennis in New York. I want to be his promoter for the rest of his career. But often, it all comes down to what you can offer a fighter. Loyalty is admirable and respected in this sport, but as I learned with Canelo Alvarez — we did seven or eight fights together — at some point, we had nothing left to offer. As much as he respected us, he moved on, and it’ll be the same with Shakur.

Right now, we’re talking about possibly continuing our relationship, but it all depends on what he can bring to the table. And if he goes elsewhere after the Zepeda fight — I wish him all the best. I’ll still be a big fan and supporter,” Hearn said during The Brian Campbell Experience.

Shakur Stevenson is set to defend his WBC title on July 12 against interim champion William Zepeda.
