WBC Launches Boxing Grand Prix for 128 Prospects Across Four Divisions

WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán has announced the launch of the Boxing Grand Prix, a large-scale tournament designed to give rising boxing talents a global platform. The project, which embodies the dream of his late father, aims to create new opportunities for young fighters worldwide.

What We Know About the Tournament

– The competition will feature 128 boxers across four weight classes:

Featherweight (up to 57.2 kg)

Super lightweight (up to 63.5 kg)

Middleweight (up to 72.6 kg)

Heavyweight (over 90.7 kg)

– Each division will have 32 participants, with the winner receiving the José Sulaimán Trophy, named after the former WBC president.

– The tournament will take place in Saudi Arabia as part of the Riyadh Season.

Tournament Format

– Opening round (Top 32): Fights will be scheduled for six rounds.

– Finals: Originally set for 10 rounds, now shortened to eight rounds.

– All fighters will undergo random drug testing through the WBC Clean Boxing Program and VADA.

– If a fight ends in a draw, an extra round may be added.

– Open scoring system and instant replays will be used to avoid controversial decisions.

– Only boxers under the age of 26 with no more than 10 professional fights will be eligible to compete, ensuring that up-and-coming talent gets a chance to shine on the world stage.

"This is the first tournament that will allow young talents from even the most remote parts of the world to step onto a big stage and showcase their skills," said Sulaimán.

The official start date has yet to be announced, but the first fights are expected to take place as early as April.
