Teofimo Lopez Explains Why He Turned Down Haney Fight

WBO world champion Teofimo Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) has explained why he declined a potential bout with undefeated super lightweight Devin Haney (32-0, 15 KOs).

“Why even give people the chance to think they can do something to us?

Tank [Gervonta Davis] said he’s heard Haney is Turki Alalshikh’s fighter.

If Haney really is his fighter and they want me to go in that direction, doesn’t that mean I’m supposed to lose there?

The only way to win is by knockout. Tank said that too — the only way to get it done is a knockout.

And I’m not downplaying my skills.

The contract terms weren’t fulfilled. I’m not going over there [to Saudi Arabia] not knowing what could happen.

That only benefits Haney’s family. They don’t care if he loses to me — they just want the money, and they’ll find a way to sue me.

I’ll show up to fight — not to just walk around the ring for 12 rounds.”

“I’ve grown up around a lot of different styles. The way Haney fights — that’s not boxing.

Let Rolly [Rolando Romero] fight him instead,” Lopez added.

On May 2, both Haney and Lopez competed on the same card and won by unanimous decision: Haney outpointed José Ramírez, while Teofimo defeated Arnold Barboza.
