American welterweight contender Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) will undergo surgery on his right hand following an injury sustained during training for his recent bout with Rolando Romero, Sports Illustrated reports.
The procedure will be performed by Dr. Steven Shin, a renowned hand specialist who has operated on several top fighters, including Canelo Alvarez and Vasiliy Lomachenko. Garcia, 26, is expected to resume training in about six weeks.
According to sources, Garcia suffered the injury during camp and received multiple cortisone injections leading up to the fight.
As a reminder, on May 2, Garcia lost to Rolando Romero by unanimous decision, having been knocked down in the second round.
