Núñez and Navarrete Face Off

On the night of September 7 in Los Mochis, Mexico, Eduardo Núñez (29-1, 27 KOs) successfully defended his IBF super featherweight title with a unanimous decision win over Christopher Díaz. Judges scored the fight 116-110 and 117-109 twice for the champion.

Following the verdict, Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn invited Emanuel Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs), the reigning WBO champion at 130 pounds, into the ring.

There’s another big Mexican war that I think needs to happen — Sugar Núñez versus Emanuel Navarrete,” said Hearn.

Both fighters expressed mutual respect and a desire to deliver the unification showdown.

Navarrete: “I liked how he boxed tonight, it was a good fight. For me, it would be an honor to face ‘Sugar’ Núñez. I think Mexico wants this above all.

Núñez: “It’s a great honor to see you here and hear that you want to fight me. I respect you a lot and would be glad to share the ring with you. Let’s give Mexico this fight.

The two champions then staged a staredown to loud applause from the Los Mochis crowd.
