According to BoxingScene, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) is planning to change the result of the fight between WBO super featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete (40–2–1, 32 KOs) and Charly Suarez (18–1, 10 KOs) to a no contest.
The bout, held on the night of May 11, ended prematurely after Round 8 due to a cut sustained by Navarrete above his left eye in Round 6. The injury prompted the ringside physician to advise the referee to stop the fight. The outcome was decided by scorecards at the time: 78–75 and 77–76 twice, resulting in a technical decision win (TD-U 8) for Navarrete.
Referee Edward Collantes initially ruled that the cut was caused by a head clash, and ringside video official Jack Reiss stated there was no indisputable evidence to overturn that call:
“According to our rules, if the moment is unclear, the referee’s call stands.
This one was very debatable. I reviewed it several times — there was no clear zoom, no definitive angle,” said Reiss.
However, later video analysis reportedly confirmed that the cut was caused by a punch from Suarez, not a headbutt. As a result, the commission is now considering changing the result to a no contest, which would likely lead to a WBO title rematch.
Previously, Navarrete claimed the cut was caused by a clash of heads, but this development directly challenges that assertion.
