The final press conference for the WBO lightweight title fight between Denys Berinchyk and Keyshawn Davis took a dramatic turn on February 12 in New York, as Davis accused Berinchyk of racism over an alleged gift box sent to him.
According to Davis, Berinchyk’s team delivered a box containing bananas and a watermelon, which he took as a racist gesture.
Davis' Statement:
"I want to point out that this man came to America and sent me bananas and a watermelon with a note. That’s unprofessional, and I see it as racism. This fight is now even more personal for me."
"You all heard me—I’m saying it loud and clear. He brought a box of bananas and a watermelon to America, sent it to my room. That’s racism in my eyes. And I have an answer for him."
Berinchyk’s Response:
"I want to say that I don’t speak English, and I don’t write it either. I saw his Instagram post, but I have nothing personal against him."
When Berinchyk’s promoter, Alexander Krassyuk, attempted to respond, Davis aggressively cut him off, saying:
"I’m gonna beat both of you up for that. Just show up on Friday night and see what happens to you both."
Davis then continued:
"This is a blessing, man. A real blessing. When he called my name after his last fight, I knew deep down that I’d be fighting Berinchyk for a world title. I never imagined it would happen at Madison Square Garden."
"I’m grateful to Top Rank and ESPN for believing in me and making this fight happen here. We could have fought anywhere in America, but they know I’m the future of Top Rank. They know I’m the future of this sport, and that’s why they wanted me to headline this card. This is my second main event at Madison Square Garden."
Then, turning to Krassyuk, Davis repeatedly shouted:
"This isn’t your show. We don’t care what you have to say. Nobody cares. This isn’t your show. This isn’t your show. This isn’t your show. Mark, tell him—this isn’t his show."
During the face-off, Davis repeatedly called Berinchyk a racist, while the Ukrainian simply responded by wishing him luck.
