Background of the Fight

This fight has been in the making for a while. Derek Chisora has often expressed his desire to face Joe Joyce, but for some time, Joyce was occupied with higher-profile bouts, such as against Oleksandr Usyk or Tyson Fury. Before the British and Ukrainian fighters agreed to their bout, Joyce was close to stepping in. He was even present at their first face-off, with Fury trying to create the impression that he was ready to fight anyone, downplaying his need to face Usyk.

Despite the heavyweight unification fight happening, Joyce lost to Zhilei Zhang. Although Joe Joyce can take a punch well, he couldn't withstand the power of the Chinese giant. Zhang won the first fight in 6 rounds and the rematch in 3. Joyce bounced back with a KO win over Kash Ali and declared himself ready to face Chisora.

Derek Chisora hasn't been very active, fighting twice in both 2021 and 2022. However, he fought only once in 2023, winning a tough bout against American Gerald Washington. Chisora left the ring with a battered face and endured heavy punches during the fight but secured the victory.

The fight against Joyce will be Chisora's first after nearly a year out of the ring.

Key Facts About the Fight

- Joyce is 38, and Chisora is 40. They are the oldest active British heavyweights at this level, with only Dillian Whyte, at 36, coming close.

- Derek is the shortest opponent Joyce has faced since 2021 when Joe fought Carlos Takam, who is also 187 cm tall but has a longer reach (204 cm compared to 188 cm). Takam lost by TKO in the 6th round.

- Joyce has the highest knockout percentage (93.75%) among Chisora's opponents since 2019. Senad Gashi had a 96.55% KO rate, but Derek outboxed him to a decision win.

- This is not a championship fight, and it's unlikely that the victory will dramatically enhance the status of either boxer. Chisora has stated he wants to have 50 professional fights – he currently has 47. Meanwhile, Joyce, after defeating Ali, expressed his desire to fight for a title, but he is not currently in the top 5 for a heavyweight title shot.
