On the night of June 15 in New York, USA, local IBF Super Lightweight Champion Richardson Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) successfully defended his title against Australian former undisputed champion George Kambosos (22-4, 10 KOs).
After the fight, both boxers shared their thoughts on the battle. Hitchins credited his preparation and tactical approach as key to victory.
“I’ve been telling the boxing world that I’m real. If you didn’t know – now you do. I warned everyone I was coming, and they should’ve listened. Now I’m here. I watched his fight with Devin Haney. I knew Haney didn’t really work on the inside and often just headhunted when Kambosos was hurt. So I decided to go with short punches. When I landed one of those, I saw him squint. I smelled blood and just kept punishing him. I told his father: ‘If you love your son – stop the fight.’ He’s durable, a real warrior, but tonight I was the better man,” said Hitchins.
Kambosos acknowledged Hitchins’ performance and placed him among the top fighters he’s faced, like Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, and Vasyl Lomachenko.
“He’s a damn good fighter. They’re all great fighters. I want greatness. I truly believed in myself, but tonight I just lacked the timing. Tonight, he was a little better than me,” said Kambosos.
Hitchins won the bout by eighth-round TKO. Fight statistics are available via the link.
