Eddie Hearn, promoter of WBA and IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs), has confirmed that talks are underway for a major showdown with WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs).
“We’re in discussions for a fight between Jaron and Teofimo, and you heard His Excellency Turki Alalshikh say it himself — this came together in the last 48 hours.
There’s a potential date in August in Saudi Arabia, though we hadn’t planned to bring Jaron back until September or October.”
Hearn explained that Ennis is currently resting after his April 12 win over Eimantas Stanionis, while the team evaluates options:
“We were eyeing a fall return.
We also have a mandatory challenger, Shakhram Giyasov, who stepped aside for the Stanionis fight.
But this is a fight worth revisiting.”
“I’ve got a call with Jaron and Bozy in an hour to decide if we really want to move forward.
There’s discussion about whether it would be at welterweight (147 lbs) or super welterweight (154 lbs).
A move up is inevitable — but this is a great fight.
I genuinely believe Jaron is too big, too strong. I have a lot of respect for Teofimo.”
On April 12, Ennis stopped Stanionis in six rounds in a unification bout. On May 2, Teofimo Lopez outpointed Arnold Barboza via unanimous decision.
