35-year-old former IBF and WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada has explained why he declined a rematch with Jesse Rodriguez.
“I’m very happy to return to the ring after last year’s loss. I’m looking forward to beating Arce and hopefully getting a title shot soon, now in the Lightweight division.
I don’t want to make excuses, but I believe I wasn’t 100% ready for the fight with Jesse Rodriguez — I had some personal issues before the bout, and physically, I wasn’t at my best either. Combined with Jesse’s strong performance, he was simply the better man that night.
If I had been fully prepared, I think the outcome might have been different, because it was an even fight up until the moment he caught me.
My team and I decided not to take the rematch because it was scheduled too soon after the first fight, and we didn’t think we’d have enough time to recover properly and make the necessary adjustments.
I had a very successful run with head coach Alfredo Caballero, but we’ve decided it’s time for a change. I’m now working with brothers Germán and Alfredo León, who I’ve known for many years in Sonora.
We asked Jesse’s team to postpone the rematch, but they told us it wasn’t possible, so we chose to walk away from the fight,” said Estrada.
In June 2024, Jesse Rodriguez knocked out Juan Francisco Estrada in the 7th round.
