Dominican Lightweight Edwin De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) has announced he is no longer working with his promoter Samson Lewkowicz.
De Los Santos was scheduled to face Keyshawn Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) on June 7, but Davis failed to make weight and was stripped of his WBO title. Lewkowicz then pulled De Los Santos from the bout, a decision the fighter opposed.
“The purse was suggested by my coach, Humberto Betancourt. What upset me the most was being offered $50,000 to go ahead with the fight… My coach demanded $300,000 because Keyshawn came in 4.3 pounds overweight (about 2 kg). I still wanted to fight for the title no matter what. I wanted that belt.
I’m now looking for someone who can push my career forward—either a manager or a promoter. I want to showcase my talent and my self-belief. I just need opportunities,” said De Los Santos.
However, Lewkowicz defended his decision, saying it was made out of concern for his fighter’s safety.
“I believe I did the right thing. Sometimes a fighter doesn’t understand he might be risking his life. Davis likely would have weighed around 165 pounds (75 kg) on fight night, while Edwin would have been at most 147 pounds (67 kg). That would’ve been suicide.
Everyone was focused on the money, but I couldn’t risk him getting injured. Davis was too big—he looked like he had trained for a 140-pound bout. He was a cheat. Sometimes the fighter can’t see it. But time will prove I was right,” Lewkowicz stated.
